This book provides an ethnography of a state-run civic education program based in a local neighborhood in Rwanda. In 2007, the Rwandan government launched a nationwide program, called Itorero, to teach all inhabitants about its vision of the model Rwandan citizen. Today, this ideal is pursued through remote training camps, village assemblies, and everyday forms of government. Based on ethnographic research of the life and workings of Itorero camps and the daily government of a local neighborhood in Kigali, this book asks how such a pursuit has come to affect Rwandans’ relation to the state and what it may tell us about modern forms of authoritarian rule. .

Dit boek bevat verrassende oplossingen en onverwachte analyses van toonaangevende wetenschappers uit de economie, sociologie, politicologie, filosofie, social geografie en psychologie voor één van de urgentste problemen van deze tijd. Nederland lijkt geëxplodeerd in fragmenten.

This book explains when and how interest groups are influential in the European Parliament, which has become one of the most important lobbying venues in the EU. Yet we know little about the many ways in which interest groups and lobbyists influence parliamentary politics. The author offers insights on four key cases of lobbying, based on the analysis of EU documents, lobbying letters, and 145 interviews. She argues that lobbying success depends on a number of factors, most notably the degree of counter-lobbying, issue salience, and committee receptiveness. These factors are brought together in the framework of “Triple-I” - interests, issues, and institutions – to determine the success or failure of lobbying. This book will be of use to students and scholars interested in EU politics and governance, EU decision-making, and interest group politics, along with policy-makers and practitioners. .

This book explores the political integration of Muslims and Islam across contemporary democracies. The author focuses on France, a country in which the integration of Muslims is usually seen as being problematic and controversial, and which is struggling with both Islamic radicalisation on the one hand, and the new wave of extreme-right populism on the other. Whereas conventional approaches to the topic of the integration of Muslims in France have tended to focus on single methods and sources, such as demographic characteristics or cultural and economic resources, the 'field mixed-method approach' offered in this book allows for a more nuanced analysis. It sheds new light on the interactive dynamics between policy processes, the role of key meso-level actors such as movements and associations, and the political entrepreneurship of Muslims themselves within the overarching frame of French citizenship. The book thus assesses the extent to which a broad set of interactions link Muslim French to the broader community of French citizens. It will be of interest to scholars and students with an interest in Political Sociology, Islamic Studies, Citizenship and European Politics.
